Bernhard Baune, PhD, MD, MPH, FRANZCP

Prof. Bernhard Baune (PhD, MD, MPH, FRANZCP) is a Specialist Psychiatrist, clinician, researcher and holds the position of Chair of Psychiatry and Head of the Discipline of Psychiatry at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has been awarded a PhD with the highest attainable distinction, a first class MPH, a post-graduate research degree with a high distinction and an excellence based Fellowship of the RANZCP.

Prof. Baune’s integrative research approach in psychiatry is largely at the interface between clinical research, psychiatric neuroscience and molecular psychiatry, stimulating forward and backward translational research in the etiology and pathophysiology of major psychiatric disorders, Neuropsychiatry, Preventive and Translational Psychiatry. Areas of major research interest and internationally recognized expertise include depression, cognitive dysfunction, psychiatric-medical comorbidity, the neurobiology of mood disorders, biomarker research and the immunology of major psychiatric disorders. Prof. Baune has specific interest in cognitive dimensions of depression, such as the relationship between cognitive performance, emotion processing and functional outcomes. He also conducts research into social cognition of depression that he sees at the interface between emotional and non-emotional cognitive function in the social interactive context.

He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, including in international leading journals (e.g., N Eng Journal Medicine, Lancet, Mol Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, Biol Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology), reviews, books and book chapters. He is editor of a book on the relationship between depression and cardiovascular disease published by Springer. Prof. Baune’s work is supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia and other national and international funding bodies. He acts as a section editor for psychiatry and neuroscience at PLOS ONE and is member of several international editorial boards. Prof. Baune is a highly sought after national and international speaker and has presented more than 250 lectures at national and international scientific and educational conferences in the past 10 yrs. Prof. Baune has received various prestigious awards for teaching and research including the Queensland Premier Award for Medical Education, the NHMRC Research Centre accreditation for integrated mental health research and the award for best medical PhD research at the University of Münster, Germany.
